White Fillings
The days of dark silver, amalgam, fillings are over. The ADA and FDA deem amalgam safe for mainstream use but warn that pregnant women, young children, and people with mercury sensitivity should not have amalgam fillings placed. A debate has raged for years, both in dentistry and in the general public, over the safety of dental amalgam, which contains trace amounts of mercury, a heavy metal.
What's In White Fillings?
Not mercury! In fact, white or tooth-colored dental fillings contain no metal whatsoever. The material is actually a composite resin; more specifically, it's a plastic with reflective particles to mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel.
How Are Fillings Placed?
When placing a white filling, Dr. Kobak chooses a shade of composite so that it matches surrounding tooth structure. After cleaning the damaged tooth, the filling is placed into the cavity, then hardened (or cured) with a heatless light. Dr. Kobak checks to make sure that the filling fits well in the patient's bite and makes adjustments if necessary.
