Bonding & Recontouring

A complete smile makeover isn't always necessary. Many of our patients just want a chipped tooth repaired, sharp teeth recontoured, or oddly spaced teeth to look more uniform. In these cases, Dr. Kobak may recommend cosmetic bonding or recontouring.

What Is Bonding & Recontouring?

Cosmetic dental bonding involves adding to existing tooth structure. If your teeth need to be wider so that spaces between them are closed, or if you’ve lost part of your tooth to injury, bonding can add structure. Dr. Kobak uses composite resin, the same plastic material used in tooth-colored fillings, for bonding. He may suggest that you undergo teeth whitening prior to cosmetic dental bonding because the bonding material is custom-shaded to match your existing tooth enamel. Once placed, the bonding’s color cannot be altered.

Cosmetic tooth recontouring removes tooth structure. A sharp, serrated, or jagged tooth can be smoothed out by gently removing some of the natural tissue. People with a tiny chip or pronounced canine teeth are often good candidates for tooth recontouring.
